White House Announces Federal Worker Job Cuts as Shutdown Approaches Third Week
The White House confirmed the initiation of government employee terminations on Friday, making good on prior threats linked to the continuing US government shutdown, which is now poised to stretch into its third consecutive week.
Formal Statement and Initial Details
The director of the White House budget office wrote on a public platform that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the official procedure for letting employees go.
While Vought did not specify which departments were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department confirmed that layoff warnings had been distributed within that department. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security representative noted that layoffs would take place at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a union representing federal workers confirmed that employees at the Education Department would be affected by the staff cuts.
Labor Reaction and Court Actions
Union leaders warned that the layoffs would have “severe consequences” on public services used by millions of Americans and vowed to contest the moves in court.
“It is disgraceful that the administration has used the funding lapse as an pretext to illegally fire thousands of workers who deliver essential functions to communities nationwide,” stated Everett Kelley, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.
The largest labor federation in the US reacted to the news, declaring, “America’s unions will see you in court.”
Political Standoff and Budget Dispute
Congressional Democrats have declined to vote for a Republican-backed bill to reopen the government unless it includes provisions related to health policy. After repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have adjourned the Senate until the following week, indicating the deadlock is unlikely to be resolved soon.
During a media briefing, the Republican House speaker, Mike Johnson, blasted Senate Democrats for rejecting the GOP proposal, which was approved in the lower chamber on a near party-line vote.
Federal workers’ final pay that government employees will see until opposition leaders decide to fulfill their duties and reopen the government,” Johnson said. “Starting next week, military personnel, who often live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a complete payment.”
Legal and Operational Constraints
Last week, unions sought a temporary restraining order to block the government from carrying out any layoffs during the shutdown. Moreover, a federal judge ordered the administration to disclose details on layoff plans, impacted departments, and if any government staff had been brought back to execute staff reductions.
A report argued that a government shutdown limits the authority of the government to conduct terminations, referencing official advice that admitted any permanent layoffs need to have been initiated before the shutdown began.
Consequences for Employees
These terminations occurred on the same day that government employees got only a incomplete payment covering the end of the previous month but not the start of the current month, since funding expired at the beginning of the period.
A public service advocate, the head of the advocacy group, criticized the political stalemate’s effect on federal employees.
This is unjust to make government staff bear the burden because our elected officials in Congress and the administration have failed to keep our government open and operational,” the advocate stated. The air traffic controllers, veterans’ healthcare providers, wildland firefighters and safety officials are not at fault for this funding crisis.”
The irony is that members of Congress and top administration officials are continuing to be paid during the funding gap.
