The Journey of a Movement can be defined by specific steps.

1. The Big Idea

A dominant personality or figureheads introduce a new and transcendent idea pledging a solution for struggling players.

And so it goes. Plans are in motion to challenge the establishment overseas. Tensions are rising. Signs of trouble appear from the sidelines. A lone figure, vulnerable, shivering, the phrase ATTACKING MINDSET written on his body as a symbol, has come staggering from the field and is removed under a blanket towards an inconclusive loan stint in county cricket.

Do you recall the start, when optimism reigned? The era of early Bazball, of Bazball without brains.

2. Initial Adoration

Movement founders offer a reboot, a brighter tomorrow, love, redemption within a community with shared faith in the big idea.

What was this thing at first? Players celebrating enjoying success. Body art. Forearms. Focus. Confident masculinity. Oh sure, England’s players insist it’s not a real term, ironically because if it doesn’t exist, what did we see?

But we know the concept. It’s the batsman attempting a move so outrageous it has to be pixelated. It’s the excitement of the captain in ultimate mode, a demeanor suggesting: focused titan, rugged appearance, natural look, so authentically Modern Savage you almost imagine to notice and find him positioned at mid-off stripped to the waist embracing nature.

It’s Ben Duckett still being allowed to talk in press conferences, out there looking like a joyful figure smartly dressed, uttering phrases such as we’re breaking down traditions. And yes, the vibe, for a significant period, was uplifting.

3. A New Life

Building period. Cohesion maintained by rote learning of mantras. These principles can appear contradictory as a test of “true belief”.

Is it just me? The reaction, the outrage, the disappointment post-defeat appears excessive, overdone. The performance was poor on the field, as history shows. The developments in the last few days are fascinating. It seems that hating Bazball is now the trend. Online outrage is widespread, angry English pundits, shots of angry middle-aged followers overseas disappointed by the short match, similar to investors demanding recourse.

Meanwhile, we have the wider backdrop of the opponent’s mixed more culturally hard-wired exasperation at these weirdly passive-aggressive buccaneers, claiming, the methods you value and have fostered and nurtured as one way of separating yourself from the opposition, well, it’s all a bit of a gag in the end old boy.

And this is the real point. It’s all cults. Bazball was a cult because cricket is a cult. In fact, the sport in England is closed, a clique, an elite gathering, a restricted environment with a long history of opaque and ritualistic cult history supporting it. It has long been where entry is limited. It’s the imperial sport of the nation, the early image-makers. And notably, the country is a phenomenon, a series of esoteric hierarchies, a monarchy still exists.

The team have been enclosed within this world from a young age. Seeking change, to build a better atmosphere, they are simply replicating their upbringing, building another enclosure, an exclusive group, but doing it this time with 15 cool guys and a coach who wants you to be yourself as long as yourself is quite a lot like myself.

Focus on the moment. Embrace challenges. However much you change, you remain stuck.
