UN:Me: An Cerebral Horror Merging Silent Hill and Social Deduction Mechanics
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed a number of intriguing future games, but one in particular has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure appears to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.
"It's a unique experience where a young woman harboring multiple personalities within her needs to flee from a maze of the psyche," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of teenage years. Inside her reside four separate souls, each with unique anxieties and drives. These souls can take over at will, unleashing their deep-seated phobias upon her without warning.
Based on revealed footage, much of the narrative unfolds within a creepy hospital, though additional clips depict the main character navigating a abandoned church.
A World of Personal Dread
"What makes you fearful of? What causes you uncomfortable?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Things that appear minor to others can activate something primal within us. This game explores that idea — fears that are unique to each person."
The core gameplay loop revolves around managing the persona that surfaces at any given moment. However, these souls will switch involuntarily during gameplay. During exploration, each soul's anxieties become exaggerated and assault the girl one after another. As the persona changes, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Unsettling Aesthetics and a Fatal Choice
Initially, UN:Me displays striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is populated by orderlies all sporting the same face, with unnervingly wide smiles. Patients in the waiting room have large flowers growing from their necks are. Flowers are an ever-present element, juxtaposing natural beauty with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique mechanic. Players must determine which of the four entities haunting the heroine is the "true" one. "All four personas asserts that the body is rightfully them," explains a developer. "During the game, you must determine who is real."
Once players have deduced a soul is fake, they must eliminate it. But, because every entity can lie or obfuscate the truth, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already eliminated the real [soul] with your own hands," the narration states. "The last one standing might be a fraud. Either way, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed launch window, but it is available to follow on platforms.
