One of the original creators of the well-known frozen dessert company Ben and Jerry's has announced how corporate owner the multinational conglomerate blocked the introduction of an innovative pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.

The entrepreneur, who established the company alongside Jerry Greenfield, announced how he plans to personally create this new flavor as part of a personal series highlighting causes Ben & Jerry's has been prevented from addressing publicly.

Ongoing Conflict Between Creators versus Parent Company

The recent announcement deepens the continuing disagreement among the internationally recognized ice cream maker and Unilever, the British consumer goods giant that has owned Ben & Jerry's since 2000.

The co-founders maintain how Unilever and its ice cream arm Magnum unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's against "fulfilling its ethical commitments".

Watermelon Flavor becoming a Symbol for Solidarity

Mr. Cohen stated through an Instagram video how he's developing a new watermelon-based frozen dessert, asking for public suggestions for naming options plus potential ingredients.

“I'm doing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder commented in a cooking set. “I'm creating a watermelon-flavored ice cream that advocates for lasting ceasefire in Palestine and calls for repairing the damage that occurred in the region.”

The watermelon has become a symbol for solidarity with Palestinians due to its colors, which match the colors in the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.

Previous Activism plus Current Developments

In 2021, Ben & Jerry's refused to sell its products in areas occupied by Israel, leading to the parent company selling the Israeli operation to a local licensee, thus allowing continued sales within disputed territories.

The new dessert series is being created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious dessert company that was first created in 2016 to support former political contender Senator Sanders with the flavor "Bernie's Return".

Management Shifts and Future Plans

Mr. Cohen indicated how he plans to create additional frozen dessert varieties focusing on issues which the company was prevented from speaking about openly due to corporate restrictions.

The announcement follows co-founder Mr. Greenfield stepped down from the company in September, following decades with the organization, citing concerns regarding how the company's autonomy had been compromised after corporate moves to curb its social activism.

At that time, Mr. Cohen commented how “My partner has strong compassion and this conflict with our parent company was breaking it."

"My heart compels me to keep working inside the company to advocate for corporate autonomy ensuring that it can actualise the social mission, the values which it was founded on and has maintained for decades," he explained to media outlets.
