The Details Known About the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Shooting

A minimum of 16 individuals lost their lives and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when gunmen shot at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian authorities are describing as a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, authorities have announced the number of fatalities stands at 16, which includes one of the alleged attackers. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were admitted to medical facilities.

The deceased are yet to be publicly named, but investigators think their ages are from 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Known as a father-of-five, he worked as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She recounted the moments before the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting began. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister expressed that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the message continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was among those killed during the attack, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number are still under care, with a number in a critical state. The injured include two police officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Called a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

In a message, he described the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He described he heard “a large number” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
