Hardline Ex- Lawmaker J.A. Kast Voted In as Chile New President.
Following a conclusive second-round vote, hardline candidate José Antonio Kast has clinched the presidency in Chile.
A Commanding Victory
After over 99% of votes tallied, Kast secured 58.17% of the votes, beating leftist former minister Jeannette Jara, who obtained 41.83%.
This represents Kast's third presidency, having previously been lost by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 second round.
Campaign Focused On Security and Immigration
Recognized for his staunch Catholic views and praise for the era of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's electoral bid was mostly focused on promises to combat growing insecurity and drastically restrict migration.
He consistently pointed to foreigners, particularly the around 330,000 undocumented individuals in Chile, for security issues. During the campaign, he gave an ultimatum for them to leave before the new term begins or face expulsion.
His plans included controversial measures such as constructing holding facilities, border walls, security fences, and strengthening the military presence on the northern frontier.
Part of a Broader Trend
Numerous analysts interpret Kast's success as fitting into a broader conservative trend in South America, following recent political wins in countries like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
However, other experts also describe it as a extension of the predictable rotation of power between left and right governments since Chile's return to democracy in 1990.
Leading Lacking a Clear Mandate
Despite his sweeping popular vote victory, Kast does not command an overall majority in Congress, not in the lower house nor the Senate, even when all rightwing parties are grouped together.
This political situation could complicate his plans, including a promise to reduce public spending by a significant sum within a year and a half—a measure for which he has yet to provided a clear explanation.
"There are several aspects about how a Kast presidency will operate that are uncertain because he has not explained the way he will achieve them," commented a political professor.
The analyst continued, "Regarding the economy, it is highly probable we will see austerity policies typical of the right-wing. However where there is much less uncertainty is on public safety, because that has been his workhorse across the race."
