Democratic lawmakers Criticize Trump After He States They Should Face Execution

Lawmakers from the Democratic party demonstrated outrage after former President Donald Trump charged a coalition of Democratic congress members of being "traitors" and asserted they should be taken into custody and sentenced "through capital punishment" following their posting of a disputed video.

The Message That Triggered the Controversy

The recorded message, shared on Tuesday, showcases six Democratic elected officials who formerly worked in armed forces or intelligence capacities.

"Similar to us, you all took an oath to protect and uphold this founding document," the officials declared in the brief video. "At present, the threats to our democratic foundation aren't just from overseas, but from right here at home. Our laws are explicit, you can decline improper directives, you can reject improper directives, you have to reject unlawful commands. No one has to follow commands that contravene the law or our national charter."

Donald Trump's Incensed Reply

The recorded statement seemed to trigger a furious response from the ex-president.

On the following morning, Trump published on his social media platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In a separate publication, he wrote: "This constitutes really serious, and Dangerous to our Nation. Their comments cannot be enabled to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a subsequent post, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also reposted a declaration that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Democratic Leaders Respond

Following Trump's remarks on that day, Top Democrats issued a joint announcement denouncing the statements.

"Violent politics has no role in America," they stated. "Representatives who were featured in the video all worked our nation with great loyalty and distinction. We clearly condemn Donald Trump's disgusting and harmful calls for execution against elected officials, and appeal to Republican lawmakers to strongly do the same."

The opposition officials also stated that they had been in touch with security officials "to ensure the security of these members and their families."

"Donald Trump must right away remove these radical digital publications and recant his aggressive language before he leads to violence," the declaration stated.

Officials' Firm Response

The representatives who participated in the video also released a statement.

"We serve as former service members and defense specialists who value this country and took an oath to protect and uphold the national charter of the United States," they stated. "That oath is permanent, and we intend to maintain it. No intimidation, pressure, or incitement will prevent us from that important responsibility."

"What's most telling is that the ex-president deems it punishable by execution for us to reiterate the law," they added. "Military personnel should recognize that we have their support as they carry out their vow to the founding principles and duty to obey only lawful orders. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our duty."

They continued: "All citizens must unite and denounce the former president's demands for our death and partisan aggression. This is a moment for ethical certainty."

Further Governmental Reactions

The Senate Democratic leader also denounced Trump's statements and shared on digital platforms: "It's important to understand: the ex-commander in chief is calling for the capital punishment of government members."

He added: "This constitutes an outright THREAT. All senators, each house member, all citizens – regardless of party – should condemn this right away and without qualification."

The GOP leader justified Trump's claim that the Democrats had engaged in "rebellion", characterizing the video as "wildly inappropriate", stating: "This constitutes very risky, you have prominent officials of the legislature telling troops to disobey orders, I think that represents unprecedented in the nation's past."

The Republican leader also allegedly informed the press that in what he read of Trump's messages, Trump was "explaining the crime of sedition" but that "legal experts have to examine the terminology and determine all that."

Executive Branch Reaction

During a executive branch meeting on that day, when questioned by a journalist, "Is the president want to kill elected officials?", the administration spokesperson answered: "Certainly not."

"We should understand about what the president is addressing," the representative said. "We see sitting members of the federal government who coordinated to arrange a digital communication to members of the American armed forces, to serving soldiers advising them to disobey the executive's proper directives."

She added: "The integrity of our armed forces depends on the command structure, and if that structure is compromised, it can cause casualties, it can result in disorder, and that's what these members of Congress ... are essentially supporting."
