California's Governor Acknowledges He Is Considering a 2028 Presidential Run

The California governor, a leading member of the Democratic party, has disclosed that he intends to decide on whether to seek the White House in 2028 after the 2026 congressional elections wrap up.

"Absolutely, it would be dishonest if I said no," Newsom stated when asked about contemplating a presidential run following the 2026 ballots. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I can't do that."

The governor's current term as California's leader concludes in the start of 2027, and he cannot run again. However, he emphasized that any decision is still years away.

"The future will decide," he remarked.

Increased Visibility as a Political Adversary

The California governor has emerged as a notable critic of the former president's team, using his digital presence and pushing a proposition that would boost Democratic congressional seats in response to GOP gerrymandering. This move has invited attacks from adversaries.

Federal Funding Dispute

The former president's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, claimed that Newsom shows no concern about the state's residents in a weekend segment on Fox News. Duffy announced intentions to withhold taxpayer dollars from California and suggested revoking the authority to issue CDLs.

"I'm about to pull $160m from the state," he stated, in the wake of a recent fatal crash in the state involving an non-citizen trucker that resulted in three deaths and casualties.

Newsom's office pointed out that the U.S. government had renewed the worker's status repeatedly, which permitted him to secure a CDL under federal law.

The transportation secretary had previously announced he was withholding $40 million from California for not enforcing linguistic standards for commercial drivers.

Strong Response from the Governor's Office

"Ex-reality TV personality, now transportation chief, fails to grasp federal law," Newsom's office responded in a previous statement responding to the secretary's comments. "For now, as opposed to this individual, we'll stick to the facts: The state's CDL holders had a fatal crash rate much lower than the national average. Texas – the sole state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate substantially higher than the state. Facts don't lie. The Trump administration does."

Voter Sentiment and Campaign Considerations

A recent survey found that a majority of the party and a significant portion of the electorate believed that Newsom must consider running for president in 2028. After the current administration began, his approval ratings has risen to an mean of 33.5% from around 30%, while his unfavorability has dropped from an average of over 40% to current figures.

In previous months, the governor commented while traveling several battleground states that he had "uncertainty" about his intentions for the next presidential election.

He noted his earlier challenges, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the young age of five.

"The idea that a guy who had modest test scores, who still struggles to read scripts, who was often seated at the back – the idea that you would even throw that out is, by itself, remarkable," he stated. "Who the hell knows? I am eager to see who emerges in 2028 and who meets that moment. And that remains the key point for the voters."
