A Story of Unexpected Generosity: The Time a Student Let Me Sleep on Her Dorm Ground
Back in 2006, My journey took me to the Australian capital for an admissions interview for medical school. I figured I would book accommodation upon arrival, but once I got there, a large conference was happening and every single youth hostels and budget accommodation were fully booked.
Hailing from Singapore, I thought maybe I could spend the night at the terminal – but quickly found that airport, not like the one back home, does not operate around the clock. Not knowing how to proceed and feeling increasingly desperate, I boarded a bus into town and found myself drifting in the direction of the casino, reasoning I might spend the night in an establishment operating through the night. That wouldn’t put me in the ideal condition for nailing the admissions interview the next morning, however, being a cash-strapped student, I couldn’t afford.
We could all use more folks like that woman.
Apparently, I appeared confused since a female student spotted me loitering in the city center and wondered if I was OK. I recounted my predicament and right away she said I could crash on the ground in her student dorm at the Australian National University – a perfect solution, given that my the important interview was scheduled for the next day. She went further by offering a meal: one filled rolls she had taken home her evening job. I had access to warm shower facilities and somewhere safe and safe for the evening.
With hindsight, I can appreciate what a big chance she accepted being a woman inviting a male stranger who was a complete stranger sleep on her floor. Back then I operated under my own unawareness and not even thinking to such safety concerns. Today, as a parent, I’m amazed she took that chance – and remain incredibly thankful.
Ultimately, I did not attending ANU, and I didn’t meet her again, but I’ve never forgotten her selfless deed of human compassion. It is my wish the universe has rewarded her generosity tenfold. Our society requires more individuals with such compassion.
